What Is the Way of the Cross?

The Way of the Cross is an ancient devotion that allows the faithful to meditate on the Passion and Death of Christ. The term, literally meaning “Way of the Cross,” refers to the symbolic path that retraces Jesus’ journey from Pilate’s Praetorium to Calvary, where He was crucified.

This tradition dates back to the early centuries of Christianity but was codified in the Middle Ages by the Franciscan Friars, who spread the devotion throughout the Christian world. Even today, the Way of the Cross Procession takes place in churches, shrines, and open spaces, with the faithful walking in prayer while following images or crosses marking the different stations.

How Many Stations Are in the Way of the Cross?

Traditionally, the Way of the Cross consists of 14 stations, recalling the events of Christ’s Passion, from His condemnation to death to His burial. However, in the year 2000, Saint John Paul II introduced a 15th Station, dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ, to highlight the message of hope brought by Easter.

Many Christian communities today include the 15th Station in their celebrations to remind us that the Passion does not end in death, but in the triumph of life.

What Prayers Are Recited in the Way of the Cross?

During the Way of the Cross Procession, the faithful recite different prayers to accompany the spiritual journey. Each station is introduced with the formula:

“We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.”

This is followed by a Scripture reading or reflection, and then a concluding prayer. Some also recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be at each station.

In more solemn celebrations, booklets with meditations written by Popes and Saints are used, or an official text approved by the Church. In recent years, thanks to technology, the practice of the electronic Way of the Cross has spread, helping to share prayers more clearly and engagingly during community celebrations.
