Ancient Russian icon Beheading of Saint John the Baptist 800 restored 35x27 cm. Ancient Russian icon depicting the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The beheading of Saint John the Baptist is told in the Gospels and other historical texts. It took place according to the order of King Herod, who had the Baptist arrested at the behest of Herodias, Herod's sister-in-law with whom he lived and whose behavior was publicly condemned by the prophet. At Herod's birthday celebration, Salome, daughter of Herodias, danced in such a way that the king was so pleased that he swore to give her whatever she wanted. The girl, urged by her mother, asked for the head of John the Baptist on the tray. The king was saddened by this, but since he had sworn an oath and did not want to be disfigured in front of his guests, he ordered that the girl be given what she asked for. So John was beheaded in prison and his head was given on a platter to the girl, who in turn gave it to her mother. The writing in Greek characters indicates the name of St John. The orthodox icon comes with a certificate of guarantee and originality, drawn up by a certified expert. It is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior.
