Antique hand-painted Russian icon "Protection of the Mother of God'' 25x20 cm.Original icon of Russian origin, dating back to the 18th-19th century "Pokrov - Protection of the Mother of God ''. One of the major Byzantine hymnographers, St. Roman the Melode, is generally connected to the icon of the Protection. Tradition has it that he possessed an awkward voice, until the Virgin appeared to him giving him the gift of singing. The Virgin ordered him to swallow a scroll and immediately afterwards the deacon miraculously obtained the gift of singing and the genius of composition, which he used throughout his life to praise Mary. Following the typical iconographic elaborations of the 17th-18th centuries, heads and figures of the faithful have multiplied at the bottom and the saints and angels at the top. Saint Roman is represented here both standing on the ambo in diaconal garments during the liturgical celebration attended by the imperial court, and in a sick bed where he receives the apparition of the Holy Virgin.This Protection icon is unique, hand painted with egg tempera on an antique wooden tablet treated with levkas and is of great artistic and spiritual value.It measures 26.5x22.5 cm, on the back it is equipped with a hook to be hung.
