This Russian icon depicts one of the most revered miraculous images in Russia and is one of the oldest images of the Mother of God, the first writing of the Odighitria is attributed to the first iconographer in the history of Saint Luke the Evangelist. The iconography is of the Odighitria type with its most important feature in the gesture of the Christ who with his right hand blesses the Mother.
Typical of these representations is the noticeable detachment between the figure of Christ and the Virgin which with the right hand usually indicates Baby Jesus sitting on his left hand. The icon wants to be a guide to God and to eternal salvation.
Celebrated on June 26, it first appeared in the year 1383 near Novgorod and was taken in 1941 from the Tikhvin monastery where it was located and brought initially to Germany and then to the USA where it remains kept in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Chicago.
