It is a faithful reproduction of the original icon which dates back to the 17th century.The religious icon is made of solid linden wood and is covered with gold leaf and then hand painted with tempera colors.The iconographic type is the Hodegetria, where the Madonna is depicted holding the Child Jesus with her left hand while with her right hand she makes a gesture to indicate. Jesus shows his left hand in the classic blessing position while with the other hand he holds a scroll, symbol of the word of God that has yet to spread.Another recurring detail in this iconographic type is represented by the fact that the two heads appear separate from each other, thus emphasizing the divine nature of the Child. On the golden background, initials in Greek can be read which refer to the Madonna, ''Mother of God'', and to Jesus, ''He who is''.Without a doubt, it is a special icon since it is labeled as ''Portaitissa'', or the ''Guardian of the Gate'', due to its curious history that can be read on the back of the icon.Turning the object around, it is possible to notice a hook for hanging it, two wooden beams to prevent time and humidity from arching the table and a certificate of guarantee.
