Icon Madonna Hodegetria Romania antiqued 31x23 cm. Hand-painted by expert Romanian painters following the Byzantine school tradition, the Icon Mother of God Hodegetria Romania antiqued measures 31x23 cm. It is attributed to the brush of the evangelist Luke and is known as Hodegetria, meaning 'she who indicates the way,' as the Virgin Mary is a guide and a source of salvation for all believers. Originally housed in Jerusalem, it was transferred in 1046 to Constantinople and later, in the 12th century, Prince Vladmir II Monomachus brought it to Smolensk, hence the name Smolenskaya. During the Golden Horde invasion in 1237, the icon became a symbol of protection, repelling the Mongol Tartars from the city walls. From the 19th to the 15th century, it was moved to Moscow, where it remained until replaced by a copy, which was placed in the 16th century in the main church of the Novodevichy Convent, currently part of a museum. This beautiful Hodegetria icon is delivered in an elegant case.
