Hand-painted Romanian Crucifixion icon, antique finish, 40x30 cm. Made by hand following the technique of the Byzantine iconographic school, this depiction known as the Simple Cross occupies a central place in the iconographic tradition of liturgical spaces. The crucified Christ is shown not as a suffering figure but as the King of Glory: the head tilted to the right, the body slightly curved and the arms outstretched in a gesture that evokes a universal embrace of all humanity. The posture expresses victory over death and the salvific meaning of the Cross.
The Cross is placed on Mount Golgotha, whose name means "place of the Skull." According to tradition, Adam, the first man, was buried there. At the base of the Cross is a dark cave with Adam's skull, washed by the blood flowing from Christ's wounds, signifying the redemption of humanity. In the interpretation of the Fathers of the Church, the Cross becomes the Tree of Life, planted at the center of the world, which unites Heaven, Earth and the Underworld and bears the fruits of salvation, in contrast to the tree that brought about humanity's fall. On the reverse of the icon there is a small explanatory leaflet illustrating the meaning of the image, together with the iconographer's signature guaranteeing its originality and artisanal quality. The religious icon is delivered in a red velvet box to ensure greater protection during transit.
