Russian icon Crucifixion painted on ancient panel 35x30 cm. This Russian icon is painted in recent times (21st century) on an ancient 19th century panel. The Crucifixion is depicted according to traditional Byzantine iconography. At the foot of the cross of Christ, there is a crack with a skull: it is the skull of Adam. Adam's skull is bathed in the blood of Jesus as a symbol of the redemption of sins. The Cross soars upwards as if it were a bridge between the earth and the Kingdom of Heaven, and Christ becomes the new Adam in whom everyone will live again. Following Christ's death by crucifixion, terrifying events followed: for three hours a gloomy darkness fell everywhere and at the exact moment he died there was an earthquake that destroyed rocks and opened the tombs of many saints who then resurrected. In fact, on the right are depicted Saint John, Jesus' favorite apostle, and the centurion Longinus.On the left is Mary the Mother of God and the Mirofore women.
