Russian icon ''Annual Menology" 45x35, painted on a wooden tablet dating back to the 19th century.Russian menological icon depicting the saints and the most relevant scenes of the ecclesiastical annual calendar. It is an original ancient icon from Moscow, real size 45x37 cm, made on a wooden tablet prepared with Levkas.Until the ninth century, the fixed ecclesiastical calendar had been universally accepted: it provided regular commemorations of the saints, thus contributing to the dissemination of their iconography. Hagiographic lives for all days of the year were compiled towards the end of the 10th century, and "menological" icons soon followed with the saints of the month depicted day by day. These were destined to later become a typical production of Russia, where menological icons abounded in recent times, at least until the October revolution. In the menological icon, for the whole year the disposition of the months follows the order of the Orthodox religious calendar which begins, according to the most ancient tradition, with the month of September with the Lord's Indict (i.e. the beginning of his preaching public) and ends in August. In this religious icon, you can see the saints and the most relevant scenes of the annual calendar, on the sides the four evangelists and Marian icons on the right and left side of the table. The Russian orthodox icon has a small ring for hanging and is equipped with an appraisal drawn up by an expert. It is delivered is an elegant blue satin box.
