Icon Madonna of Tikhvin painted on ancient Russian panel 21st century 38cm x 32cm x 2cm.This religious icon is a modern reproduction on an ancient Russian table and is one of the most revered icons of Russia. The icon first appeared in 1383 near Novgorod. A 16th century legend, on the other hand, tells of four apparitions, the last of which on the bank of the Tikhvinca river, hence the name of the icon, where the church of the Dormition of the Madonna and the Tichvinski Monastery were later built. The monastery managed to escape the Swedish siege in 1613-1615 thanks to the intercession of the Holy Virgin, invoked thanks to this icon. Under the reign of Alexei Michailovic, May 26 was established as the day to celebrate the icon's appearance. Furthermore, a real liturgy was written to commemorate the apparition. During the occupation of 1941, the icon was brought to Germany and later to the USA, in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Chicago. In 2004, the icon was handed over to Russia and brought back to the Tikhvinvki monastery. The particularity of this icon is the baby Jesus who blesses his mother while the Madonna points to Jesus with her right hand.
