This Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Calvary with Christ crucified, flanked by Mary, Saint John, the Myrrhbearers, and the Centurion Longinus. Above appear two seraphim and, at the top of the cross, the Ancient of Days and Christ the Savior surrounded by angels. The cross, typical of Russian Orthodox tradition, is finely crafted in bronze. Jesus' body, fixed with four nails and with his head tilted to the right, expresses a majestic serenity, following the Byzantine iconography that portrays not the agony but the royalty of the Redeemer. At the foot of the cross, Adam's skull bathed in Christ's blood symbolizes humanity's redemption. The scene also includes the Old Jerusalem in decline and the New Jerusalem, alluding to the victory of life over death and the hope of resurrection.
