Antique Russian icon with riza Christ Pantocrator Cosmocrator, dimension 28x22x3 cm, riza made of 1860.
The story depicts frontal and hieratic full-length Jesus in a blessing position. In his left hand, he holds the open Gospel and with his right hand he blesses the faithful according to the Orthodox / Byzantine rite.
In the Aureola (Nimbo) there are the typical Greek letters to indicate "He who is". The intensely expressive face expresses the ineffable reality of God made Man, a typical concept taken up in all the paintings depicting the Christ Pantocrator over the centuries. Some other typical features of the Christ Pantocrator are; the helmet hair divided in the middle that fall at the nape, the spacious forehead and the well-marked eyebrows, the large pensive and deep eyes divided by the rather elongated nasal septum, red lips and narrow in a silence of wisdom, small ears almost deformed to indicate a listening position. In this version we prefer the representation of the open Gospel by choice of the Orthodox Church which preferred to read some sentences to the faithful who are often the same (it is noted that representations with the closed Gospel are very rare).
