Antique Russian icon depicting Our Lady of Korsun, also known as the Madonna of the Caresses, belonging to the Greek iconographic type Glykophilousa (Madonna of Tenderness). In this representation the faces of the Virgin and Child are closely juxtaposed in an intimate gesture, expressing the bond of love between Mother and Son and engaging the viewer emotionally. The composition is cropped just below the shoulders, a typical choice of this iconography that concentrates attention on the expressiveness of the faces. Subtle lead-white highlights around the eyes and the delicate modelling of the features enhance the image's spiritual dimension. The hands, deliberately elongated and painted in lighter tones, join in a harmonious gesture that accompanies the intensity of the gaze and underscores the affectionate relationship between the Virgin and the Child. The orthodox icon is executed on an antique wooden panel prepared with levkas and hand-painted in egg tempera according to the Russian iconographic tradition. It is accompanied by an expert appraisal and delivered in an elegant blue velvet case.
Provenance: Northern Russia. Technique: egg tempera. Materials: wooden panel with levkas preparation. Dimensions: 33 x 27 cm. Period: 19th century.
