Antique Russian Crucifixion Stauroteca Icon 19th Century 38x35 cm. This Russian orthodox icon depicts Calvary according to classic Byzantine iconography. In the center stands a typical Russian bronze cross, topped by the Elder of Days, with the Savior Christ haloed below and two angels. Jesus' body, affixed with four nails and with the head inclined to the right, conveys noble serenity, devoid of the signs of agony. At the base of the cross appears a cleft with Adam's skull, a symbol of universal redemption: Christ's blood, the new Adam, unites the earth with the Kingdom of Heaven. In the background, the fallen Old Jerusalem and the rising New Jerusalem are depicted. The scene recalls the wonders recounted in the Gospels, three hours of darkness, an earthquake, and the resurrection of many saints, and includes the figures of the Mother of God, Saint John, the centurion Longinus, and the Myrrh-bearing women, along with four saints at the edges, completing the message of faith and victory over death.
