Ancient Russian icon St. Michael the Archangel 19th century 30x25 cm. Patron saint of Kiev, St. Michael was depicted on the armors and crests of the Rurik dynasty. The icon portrays St. Michael in his battle against Satan, set in a hilly landscape wielding a sword in his right hand. In the Old Testament, Michael is the protector angel of Israel, the 'noblest prince' fighting for the people of God and defending their cause. With the spread of Christianity, the cult of St. Michael expanded greatly in the East. In Russia, the powerful protector of Christianity was revered throughout history. Numerous churches were dedicated to him, and he is commemorated twice in the Orthodox liturgical calendar: on September 6th and October 8th. St. Michael was a central figure in popular devotion, invoked for protection in wars, healing the sick, safeguarding sailors and traders, and especially aiding the souls of the departed in the afterlife.
