In the Old Testament, Michael is the protector angel of Israel, the 'noblest prince' fighting for the people of God and defending their cause. With the spread of Christianity, the cult of St. Michael expanded greatly in the East. In Russia, the powerful protector of Christianity was revered throughout history. Numerous churches were dedicated to him, and he is commemorated twice in the Orthodox liturgical calendar: on September 6th and October 8th. St. Michael was a central figure in popular devotion, invoked for protection in wars, healing the sick, safeguarding sailors and traders, and especially aiding the souls of the departed in the afterlife.
