Ancient Russian icon Saint Michael the Archangel 55X45 cm. The icon is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, considered the protector of the heavenly hosts in the fight against the forces of evil, guardian angel of Israel, the noblest prince who fights for the people of God and defends their cause. Michael is depicted fighting against Satan, against the backdrop of a hilly landscape, holding a sword in his right hand. According to the Old Testament, Satan originally appears as the more glorious than God but the aspiration he had to become like God made him fall from his pride. From then on he became Satan and his followers, the fallen angels, transformed into devils. The favor granted to Michael is linked to the fact that he fought and defeated Satan, stripping him of his robe of light. Saint Michael is also considered one of the protagonists of popular devotion, healer of the sick, protector of sailors and traders and helper of the souls of the deceased in the afterlife. Numerous churches were consecrated to him and he is commemorated twice in the Orthodox calendar.
