According to tradition, Christ and the Virgin appeared to him, restoring his freedom and episcopal dignity after his arrest. From the 10th to the 13th century, his Byzantine iconography in Russia incorporated local episodes like the Dnieper River rescue. This half-length icon shows him in bishop's robes with an omophorion adorned with crosses, blessing with the Gospel in hand. His features - high and wrinkled forehead, intense eyes, short beard - express the strength of a defender of the faith, an exorcist, and a healer. Originating from a sacred place in the Choluy region, a renowned icon trading center, this panel was intended for a church or monastery due to its size, not for domestic use. The side saints indicate its original purpose. Provenance: Greece. Technique: Egg tempera. Materials: Wood, levkas. Dimensions: 28x22.5 cm. Time period: 1827.
