In the 18th century, it was declared the patroness of St. Petersburg, where the majestic Kazan Cathedral was dedicated on Nevsky Prospekt. Its protection was also invoked during the 1812 war and the siege of Leningrad in World War II. Small in size like the original, it belongs to the Odighitria type, depicting the Mother of God half-length with the Baby in an upright position, a widespread iconographic model from the 16th century.
