Spikenard is a plant for perfumes that belongs to the same family as valerian; it grows in the Himalayas, China, India and Nepal.
Its rootstock can be pressed and distilled in an amber-coloured, intensely aromatic essential oil that can be used as a perfume (but it also has a medical aromatic essence) and is one of the 11 plants used as an incense in the Jerusalem temple.
The most ancient known use of this oil comes from some very small amphorae, found in the Egyptian tombs.

This unguent was used by the Jewish populations at the time of Moses. It was considered a luxury in Ancient Egypt, in the near Orient and in Rome, where it was the main ingredient of the nardinium perfumes.
