Russian egg Our Lady of Perpetual Help hand painted 24 cm. The egg depicts the Madonna with Child, more precisely Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Our Lady of Perpetual Help falls into the iconographic genre of the Amòlyntos (Immaculate) or the Mother of God of the Passion. In this genre, the Virgin is represented holding the Child with her left arm and he holds her other hand with his fingers. However, in this representation, Jesus does not look at his mother: his gaze is turned elsewhere. According to the iconography, his gaze is directed towards the Archangel Gabriel while holding the nails and the cross. Mirroring the Archangel Gabriel is the Archangel Michael who holds in his hand other symbols characteristic of the most difficult but at the same time full of meaning period of Christ: the Passion. In fact, Michael holds the cane with the sponge used to make Jesus drink vinegar on the day of his crucifixion and the spear with which his side was pierced. This image depicts the loving kindness expressed by the mother's tender gaze towards her child and, at the same time, the tragic symbols of the prophetic and inevitable destiny of Jesus' death on the cross.
