Hand-painted Romanian Icon Mother Hodighitria 31x23. This religious icon is painted by expert Romanian iconographers following the Byzantine tradition. It is attributed to the evangelist Luke and named Hodighitria, meaning 'she who points the way', as the Virgin Mary is viewed as a spiritual guide and a source of salvation for believers. Initially kept in Jerusalem, it was transferred to Constantinople in 1046, then brought in the 12th century to Smolensk by Prince Vladimir II Monomakh, hence the name Smolenskaya. In 1237, during the Golden Horde invasion, the icon became a symbol of protection, warding off the Mongol-Tartars from the city walls. Between the 14th and 15th centuries, it was relocated to Moscow, where it stayed until replaced by a copy placed in the 16th century in the main church of the Novodevichy Convent, now part of a museum. This orthodox icon is characterized by a 'trakele' effect, a particular technique that provides depth and three-dimensionality to the image, enhancing details with light and shadow effects, giving it a more evocative and mystical appearance. The icon comes in an elegant box, perfect for storage or as a precious spiritual gift.
