Icon painted in Romania on fir wood, following the Byzantine techniques of the 16th century.
The work belongs to the group of Byzantine icons defined as Mother Eleousa (The merciful), the most widespread Marian icon. The Virgin carries the Child on her left arm, and leans her head towards him as a sign of affection. The Child hugs his cheek towards her, affectionately touching her face.
