Russian icon Veil of Maria Pokrov 19th century 30x25 cm restored antique tablet.On October 1st, according to the Julian calendar, Pokrov, or the day of the Veil of the Most Holy Mother of God, is celebrated in Russia.During this feast, the Orthodox church celebrates the apparition of the Virgin to Father Andrew, the Fool in Christ, who with some faithful had locked himself up in the church of Blacherne in Constantinople to pray against the imminent arrival of a horde of barbarians.According to tradition, suddenly, Father Andrea saw the Virgin appear, surrounded by a host of angels, and who took off her veil (maphorion) and spread it over the faithful.The veil spread and hung over the heads of the praying men to symbolize Her protection.This icon is divided into two main areas. Above on the frontal image, the Virgin is depicted with raised hands, and on her forearms a strip of fabric, that is, the Veil (Pokrov), is visible. To her right and left are numerous angels and saints.In the lower area, San Romano the Melode is depicted, author of many religious hymns and also celebrated on October 1st.The Pokrov Mother of God icon is a work of art with attention to the smallest details and hand painted with egg tempera by Russian master painters. The icon, dating back to the 19th century, is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity and measures 32x26 cm.
