Pokrov Protection of the Mother of God Russian icon restored on ancient panel 35x28 cm. The orthodox icon of Protection is closely associated with Saint Romanus the Melody, a well-known Byzantine hymnographer who, according to tradition, received the gift of singing from the Virgin Mary. Originally gifted with a less than melodious voice, Romano was visited by the Virgin who appeared to him ordering him to ingest a scroll. Following this command, the deacon miraculously acquired remarkable singing ability and a talent for composition, which he dedicated to praising the Virgin for the rest of his life. This story is depicted in the upper left corner behind the church in the icon. The work, dating back to the 17th-18th century, shows a wealth of figures including believers, saints and angels, densely arranged due to a typical horror vacui, characteristic of the iconographic style of that period.
