This is one of the oldest images of the Mother of God.The icon "Mother of God of Tikhvin '' is one of the most revered miraculous images in Russia. It seems that the icon appeared in the year 1383 near Novgorod and tells of four apparitions of the sacred icon, the last of which on the left bank of the Tikhvinca River, where the church of the Dormition of Our Lady was later built and in 1560 the Tichvinski monastery. This monastery escaped the Swedish siege in the years 1613-1615 due to the intercession of the Holy Virgin invoked in front of the icon. In 1658, during the reign of Alexei Micalovich, an ancient Byzantine legend appeared in which the image of Tikhvin was identified with the Odigitria of Byzantium, which in the fourteenth century would have left the Byzantine capital to appear on the Tikhvinca river. Under the reign of Alexei Micalovich it was decided to celebrate the icon on June 26 and a proper liturgy was written in memory of the apparition. During the occupation of 1941, the icon was taken from the Tikhvin monastery and brought first to Germany, then to the USA where it was kept in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Chicago.
