The Virgin Mary icon is generally linked to one of the greatest Byzantine hymnographers, Saint Roman the melodist. Tradition has it that he possessed an awkward voice, until the Virgin appeared to him giving him the gift of singing. The Madonna ordered him to swallow a scroll and immediately afterwards the deacon obtained the gift of singing and the genius of composition, which he used throughout his life to sing Mary's praises. Following typical iconographic elaborations of the 17th-18th century, heads and figures of the faithful represented below and of the saints and angels depicted above multiplied. Saint Roman is represented in the lower register of the icon standing on the ambo in diaconal robes during the liturgical celebration attended by the imperial court, while with a play of perspective you can see the interior of the temple, where the apparition of the Holy Virgin takes place. .This Russian icon is a unique piece of real size 35x31 cm.
