Our Lady of Tikhvin icon mid-1800s Russia 53.5x44.5 cm.Russian orthodox icon 53.5x44.5 dating back to the first half of the 19th century and from the Moscow school. The religious icon is made in egg tempera on a linden wooden board, depicts the famous Our Lady of Tikhvin, one of the most venerated in Russia. The Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God is characterized by cracks, called ''craquelure'', which form after so many years and which certify the authenticity of the work. This icon is of the Hodegetria type, or ''she who shows the way''. This image presents a very important detail, the gesture of Christ. With his right hand he blesses the Mother, while with his left hand he grasps the sacred texts. Observing the Russian work, one notices the sole of Christ's bare foot, a symbol of vulnerability. It is a much loved icon because it is considered a guide to God and to eternal salvation, as the Mother of God indicates Him as the only way.It is thought that the first Hodegetria icon was painted by the first iconographer in history, namely St. Luke the Evangelist. This Our Lady of Tihvinskaya icon is celebrated on June 26th. The work is sent together with an appraisal carried out by an expert.
