The icon depicts Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most loved and revered icons.The original icon had a miraculous history. In 1579, the Madonna appeared to a little girl in her sleep and showed her the place where the famous icon was hidden by the first Christians. Following the discovery, the orthodox icon was taken to the Kazan church, becoming the patroness of the capital of St. Petersburg. Prayers were also addressed to her during the Nazi siege of Leningrad.The Our Lady of Kazan icon is made with egg tempera on a solid linden wood panel.
