This Russian Deesis triptych was cast in bronze and decorated with polychrome enamels in five tones, datable to the late 19th century. The piece originates from the Moscow area, one of the most active centers for enameled metal icon production. The central panel depicts Christ Pantocrator seated on a throne, holding an open book and bearing a cruciform halo inscribed with the sacred letters "Ο ΩΝ". Flanking him are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, shown in richly worked tunics, holding a ceremonial staff and a Christological medallion. The polychrome enamel, applied in solid fields over a chased background, displays the typical colors of Russian iconograph: blue, green, white, yellow and black, each with symbolic meaning related to divine kingship, purity and heavenly protection.
