Antique Russian Icon Mother of God of Kazan XIX century 32x27.1 cm. This miraculous icon was found in Kazan on July 8, 1579, after the Virgin appeared to a little girl indicating the place where the image had been hidden during the Tartar invasion. In 1612, a copy of it accompanied Kusma Minin and Prince Dimitri Pogiarski in the liberation of Moscow from the Poles, an event attributed to her intercession, becoming the protector of the Romanov dynasty and one of the most venerated relics in all of Russia. The church celebrates her feast on July 8 and October 22, the liberation of Moscow, traditionally holding solemn processions with the icon around the city walls. Over time, she was also considered the patroness of St. Petersburg, where in the XIX century the Kazan Cathedral was dedicated to her on Nevsky Prospekt. The icon was invoked during the war of 1812 and the siege of Leningrad in World War II. Small in size like the original, the image belongs to the iconographic type Hodighitria, characterized by the Madonna up to the chest and the Child in an upright position. These cut depictions became very popular starting from the XVI century.
