The brothers, originally from Arabia, lived in the 3rd century and were renowned as physicians who healed for free, known as the Anargyri ("without money"). Trained in Syria, they practiced medicine in Aegea and Cyrrhus, tending especially to the poor and proclaiming the Gospel, converting many pagans. During a time of persecutions they bore firm witness to the Christian faith and were martyred; they have been called "illustrious athletes of Christ and most generous martyrs." Their reputation as powerful intercessors spread quickly, inspiring the construction of churches and basilicas throughout the Christian world. The Church venerates them as patrons of physicians, surgeons, pharmacists and hospitals, and many faithful invoke them for healing. Their cult is attested in the oldest liturgical texts, including martyrologies and synaxaria, and remains alive today.
