Icon of Saint George and scenes of life, finift enamels, Russia, 20th century, 34x29 cm. The cult of Saint George is attested by literal and archaeological documents. The warrior saint suffered martyrdom under Daciano, who gathered seventy-two sovereigns to decide on measures against the Christians. Saint George professed himself a Christian, was tortured and beheaded. The legend, rich in mythological reminiscences, is one of the most widespread cults in iconography. At the center of the icon, we find Saint George on the white horse who pierces the dragon and the princess comes towards him from the walls. On the other side, a celestial sphere is visible, from which Christ appears, symbol of divine grace against evil. Saint George is venerated as the patron saint against the evil one and against enemies. His protection, in fact, was invoked against enemy attacks and against livestock diseases. The St George icon contains scenes from the martyr's life, and is finished with the enamel technique called ''Finift''. Measuring 34x29 cm, it is shipped together with a box with an appraisal carried out by an expert. It comes from Rostov, Russia.
