After placing his hand in its place, John began to pray before an image of the Mother of God, who after a while appeared before him and told him that he was healed. Out of joy he wrote a song to express his love for the Mother of God and once he became a monk he attached a silver hand in memory of his healing. The orthodox icon was given as a gift to the archbishop of Serbia, but during the Turkish attack, it was loaded onto a donkey to make it escape the enemies. The icon arrived on Mount Athos and was taken by the monks to the Hilendarsi monastery.
