The wooden icon remained reserved for the wealthier social classes. Thanks also to its resistance to scratches and wear, the metallic icon became the travel icon par excellence. Initially the aesthetic content was modest, but then the masters began to give beauty and dignity to these works of art, which starting from simple medieval crosses and bronze plaques, took forms representative of various themes.
