Ancient Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator 30x25cm.
The most widespread and well-known icon is that of the ''Christ Pantokrator'', the one who idealized the maximum glory and power of Christ. Jesus is depicted in a full-length blessing position, with his left hand he holds the Gospel book facing the faithful. With the right hand, according to the Orthodox/Byzantine rite, he blesses by extending the palm of the hand open and the thumb and ring finger joined. The typical Greek letters are depicted in the halo which indicate ''He who is'' while the written rituals appear on the pages of the Gospel which read: ''I give you a new commandment: that you love one another as I have beloved You - come to me all of You who are afflicted - put my yoke upon You - I am the Light of the world - never judge for you will be judged''.In this type of icon, the iconographer tries to express the reality of God made Man. In the Orthodox tradition, the Church preferred to have its faithful read some very important phrases for the Christian liturgy.Supporters of the closed Gospel book say that there is no salvation if the evangelists' sentences are not followed and impressed on the minds of all Christian believers. The Christ Pantocrator icon was hand painted in Moscow in 1800 and measures 31x25.5cm.It is shipped together with a box set and an expert report.
