In the city of Suja, in the Smolensk region, during a severe epidemics affecting Russia between 1654 and 1655 Marian icons became very popular.
After heart-felt prayers, thanks to divine inspiration, the people of the parish of Resurrection in that city asked for the making of an icon representing the Mother of God and that it be blessed and carried through the city in a procession. The intercession of the Mother of God granted the ending of the plague.
It can be noticed that the Virgin is holding one of the Son's feet, while he is making a gesture of blessing and holding the Scripture.
Very detailed icon, made in Russia, entirely handmade by Russian painters according to the traditional techniques and norms of Russian iconography.
