After the Annunciation, Archangel Gabriel left the Virgin. Joseph, after overcoming his doubts thanks to the apparition of an angel in his sleep, took Mary with him. The couple moved to Bethlehem for the census. There, in a cave, Jesus was born. The shepherds in the surroundings were woken up an given the great news by a multitude of angels and went to see the Baby. The Magi were led to the place where the Holy Family was by a star, and brought gol, incense and myrrh for the Child.
The icon portrays Mary at the centre of the composition, with the Infant at her feet. In the cave a donkey and a ox lean toward the Child to keep him warm with their breath. The light of the stare falls from above. At the bottom, two scenes are depicted: on left we can see Joseph, and on the right the moment of the birth, with the midwife taking care of the newborn.
The bright colors of the composition are typical of the Russian type of representation of the Nativity.
