This religious icon was brought from Constantinople to Kiev in the Vychgorod Monastery. In 1395 the invasion of the Tartars represented a threat to Moscow, so the icon was brought to the Russian capital so it could lead them to safety with prayers. Thus, thanks to the prayers of the Mother of God, the city of Moscow was miraculously saved from destruction. The feast of the icon is held three times a year: on August 26, the memory of the salvation of Moscow from the invasion, on June 23 in memory of the transfer of the icon to Moscow, and on May 21, the memory of the liberation of Moscow from Machmet-Girei.
