Russian icon of January Menologue antique 30x25 photoengraving.Original Russian icon dating back to about 1930 which reproduces the January Menologue and in which it is therefore possible to see the saints and the most relevant scenes of the month of January, such as the baptism of Jesus in the first register.Until the ninth century the fixed ecclesiastical calendar had been universally accepted: it provided regular commemorations of the saints, thus contributing to the dissemination of their iconography. Hagiographic lives for all days of the year were compiled towards the end of the 10th century and "menological" icons soon followed with the saints of the month depicted day by day. These were destined to later become a typical production of Russia, where menological icons also abounded in recent times, at least until the October revolution. The Greek term Meneus (or Menologio) indicates a collection of saints' lives divided according to the order of the ecclesiastical calendar. In the menological icon, for the whole year the disposition of the months follows the order of the Orthodox religious calendar which begins, according to the most ancient tradition, with the month of September with the Lord's Indict (i.e. the beginning of his preaching public) and ends in August. This icon of Russian origin (Moscow) is a unique piece, made on a wooden board. Real size 31.5x26.5 cm. It is painted with the photoengraving technique. It has a ring on the back so that it can be hung and is accompanied by an appraisal opinion from Russia.
