Ancient Russian icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, one of the most widespread Christological representations in the Orthodox iconographic tradition. Christ is shown frontally in a solemn, blessing pose: with his right hand he makes the blessing gesture according to the Byzantine rite, while his left hand holds the closed Gospel Book, a less common variant that symbolically evokes the whole evangelical message of the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). In the gilded halo (nimbus) are the Greek letters signifying “He who is”, emphasizing Christ’s divine nature. The face, with an intense and solemn gaze, follows the traditional Pantocrator canons: hair parted in the middle, broad forehead, deep eyes and stylized features that convey the image’s spiritual dimension. The icon is painted by hand in egg tempera on an antique wooden panel prepared with levkas and a gold ground. A metal ring on the reverse allows wall display. The work is accompanied by an expert appraisal issued by a certified specialist and is delivered in a blue satin-lined presentation box. Origin: Moscow, Russia. Technique: Egg tempera. Materials: Wood panel prepared with levkas and gold ground. Dimensions: 33x28 cm. Period: 19th century.
