Marriage at Cana - Tabula Fenestrata, Mario Eremita.
Description: The work portrays the Marriage at Cana. The iconography is of contemporary style, not static or close to classical representation. The transparencies and the bright colours recalls the shimmering of glass, while the composition of the tables with hinges is related to the Venetian Renaissance, from which the artist takes inspiration.
Symbolism: The Marriage is set in an ideal, almost metaphysical, architectural environment. There are five different levels of figuration: the night sky with the moon; the architecture, the spiritual characters playing instruments or singing, the treetops, the peacock (symbol of Christianity); the married couple; the table with the guests and the disciples; Jesus and Mary with the jars containing the water being miraculously turned into wine. The colours fade in the moonlight and create a focusing effect on the light that comes from Jesus himself. On the left, some servants are filling the last three jars, while on the right some others are cooking. On the outside, two figures with musical instruments are depicted.
This is a Venetian icon by artist Mario Eremita: it is a shellac-on-panel painting inspired, in its structure, by traditional bizantine icons of Eastern Europe. The painting style, however, is contemporary. This is one of artist Mario Eremita's works, a unique piece, not a copy. The artist's mind and originality are expressed through his series of works.
