Last Supper - Tabula Fenestrata, Mario Eremita.
Description: The subject of the work is the Last Supper. The iconography is of contemporary style, not static or close to classical representation. The transparencies and the bright colours recalls the shimmering of glass, while the composition of the tables with hinges is related to the Venetian Renaissance, from which the artist takes inspiration.
Symbolism: the Last Supper is set in the home of Saint Mark's family. The disciple is portrayed as a child on Jesus's left. This painting is inspired by those works where the people are gathered around the table sitting on the floor, as in middle-eastern habits. Jesus is depicted in the act of breaking the bread, in tones of white, symbol of purity. Behind him two doves and a fig plant are visible. At the bottom left, Judas is counting the money, while the other Apostles surround Christ. On the two side tables small figures of musician are portrayed at the top, while farmers carrying food and beverage are at the bottom. The predominant colours are reds, recalling the sunset and twilight. On the outside, two angelic figures with musical instruments are portrayed.
This is a Venetian icon by artist Mario Eremita: it is a shellac-on-panel painting inspired, in its structure, by traditional bizantine icons of Eastern Europe. The painting style, however, is contemporary. This is one of artist Mario Eremita's works, a unique piece, not a copy. The artist's mind and originality are expressed through his series of works.
