Russian icon, Rublev's Holy Trinity 31x26cm.
This icon is one of the most famous and mysterious expressions of world art.
The masterpiece as we know it today, first appeared to the restorers' eyes in 1919.
Before Rublev, the Holy Trinity icon used to be represented with the 3 angels, Abraham and Sarah sitting at a table under an oak tree.
Andrzej Rublev was the first who managed to represent in the icon of the most important dogma of Christianity: he took away Sarah, Abraham and the table and represented this moment with a cup, the one indicated by the central angel.
The great oak tree became a small tree. In this way all the temporal things have disappeared, and only the eternal things are left.
This icon is painted by Orthodox artisans following the antique rules of Russian art.
