Antique Russian icon, "Pokrov: Protection of the Mother of God" XVII century 31x26cm.
The icon of the Protection is usually liked to one of the greatest Byzantine iconographers, Saint Romanos the Melodist.
The legend narrates that Romanos had a really disagreeable voice, until the Virgin appeared to him and gave him the gift of singing.
The Mother of God commanded him to eat a scroll, and as soon as he did he miraculously got the gift of singing and the genius for composition, which he used all his life to praise the Virgin.
