Antique Russian Icon Christ Acheiropoieta 50x45cm XIX century.
The tradition links this icon of the Face of Christ to the King Abgar, of Edessa, who Received it directly from Christ, to whom he had asked for a picture.
Christ wet his face and dried it with a Mandylion cloth, upon which his features were miraculously impressed.
Abgar, therefore, had the first Acheiropoieta, an image which wasn't painted by a man's hands.
This beloved and venerated icon became the prototype of al the representations of the Face of Christ, so that he could be recognised in every icon.
The protective function of the Icon Acheiropoieta of the Saviour explains the reason why it was frequently worn on the imperial military standards, and why it was reproduced on the professional labara in the western tradition.
