The Icon of our Lady Mother of God of Tichvin is one of the most venerated miraculous image of Mary in Russia.
The story tells of her apparition in 1383 near Novgorod; three more followed, one of whom, on the river Tichvinc, where afterwards the Dormizione of Madonna church was built and in 1560, the Monastery of Tichvinski.
During the occupation of 1941 the icon was taken to Germany, afterwards brought to the United States where it was kept in Chicago, inside the Cathedral dedicated to Peter and Paul. Pietro e Paolo. In 2004 the icon was returned to Russia back to the Monastery of Tichvin.
The iconography of the Madonna of Tichvin is really close to the Odighitria kind, that is 'She who shows the way': with her right hand she points to her Son, as to show mankind that the path to be followed is that leads to God.
The most important symbol is Baby Jesus gesture: with his right hand he blesses his Mother..
The peculiarity of this icon is gilded brass basma, richly worked with details in relief.
